Was It Me?

As Peter mentioned in his last entry, I was in San Diego this week speaking at the annual convention of INNUA, which I believe stands for International Nortel Networks Users Association. I came away with a few new contacts, one of which is particularly exciting. But on the whole I was just a touch disappointed. I was to give my presentation twice. The first session was scheduled right after lunch on a day when there was no formal luncheon. The attendees all escaped the San Diego Convention Center, and I'm told overwhelmed the restaurants within walking distance, such that at speech time, very few made it back. On day two, my presentation was the last one of the day before the big "Gala". You guessed it. The attendees bailed in order to get back to their hotels for a break and change into casual attire.

I ended up not giving my presentation, but just talking to the few hardy souls who stayed. In the end, they thanked me saying this casual discussion taught them more than the typical presentation, and in particular is how I met the great new prospect mentioned before.

So in the end, it turned out ok. But I was reminded that at trade show venues such as this, the timing of your presentation is critical. Next time around, before I say yes to such a speaking engagement, I intend to avoid those "dead time zones" when learning takes a back seat to food.
