Counting Tanks

This doesn't have much to do with customer service, but it's a nice illustration of the power of statistical methods.

During WWII, the allied statisticians used the serial numbers on captured German tanks to estimate the production rate. They simply use the highest serial number on a tank captured in the month to estimate the total number of German tanks produced that month. Then they used the standard margin of error calculation to see how close they were.

As for how well it worked, and the strategic importance it had, you'll just have to read the article.
