What happens when you fire an AOL retention specialist?

AOL recently announced that it will be cutting thousands of staff as it switches from a paid online service to free.
Presumably, most of the retention specialists, those call center agents tasked with preventing customers from canceling their service, will get the axe. So what happens when you try to fire a retention specialist?
