Security?

Increased security is a fact of life these days and often becomes an excuse for terrible service, but every now and then I get the suspicion that not all those security measures are really doing much good. "Security" seems to be the catch-all cover for all kinds of bureaucratic laziness, stubbornness, and authoritarianism. "Security" has become the grown-up equivalent of "Because I said so, now stop annoying me."

Now there's the 2006 Stupid Security Awards, which is looking for the best (worst) examples of stupid, intrusive, and counterproductive "security" measures around the world.

The last round of awards was in 2003, and includes gems like the airport security screener who, in the wake of the shoe-bomber incident, checked one passenger's shoes for explosives by slamming them hard against a table. The shoes didn't blow up, and so were cleared through security.

Then there was the passenger who attempted to carry a box of tea through airport security, but unfortunately, it was of the variety known as "Gunpowder Tea." After some discussion, the tea was permitted on the airplane, but only after being emptied into a different bag. The box with the offending word "gunpowder" was not allowed past the checkpoint.
